ResEdit |
ResEdit
allows you to modificate or create icons, with a 256-colors
palette and few tools as pen, brush, paint, eraser, tools
for selection, and forms (circle, rectangle...). There's also
a patterns palette, and few effects as rotation, horizontal
and vertical reflection.
Note: you can't create or edit 32-bits icons (icns),
nor the Mac OS X icons with ResEdit.
How? Create a new document in ResEdit, add a icl8 resource
(Command-K, then type icl8), and voilà... you're ready
to draw your first icon. |

IconMachine |
| An
other nice tool that lets you creating your own icons, for
all Mac OS system (from 7 to X). I know it's a very complete
tool for having tried it, but as it's not the one I use, I
wouldn't be able to say much more... But it's certainly worth
you give it a try. |

To Store Icons
Why is it useful
to store icons? Before Mac OS 8.5 (with the HFS disk format),
an icon uses one block of memory, so it can be 5 Ko or 13, even
20 (the bigger your disk is, the bigger the block is), so if you
have an important collection, calculate the waste! If you have
a hard disk with HFS+, the waste won't be so huge, but it's still
nice to be able to store icons anyway! :)
|
|
IconArchiver |
| It
is, according to me, the really best icon collector! Icons
are compressed and take only little place on your disk. With
the version 4.0, you can export them as custom icon, custom
folder, cicn resource, KidPix Stamp, PICT file, PICT resource,
PNG file, source code, Text Image, and Windows Icon file.
The easiest way to convert your icons for a PC! |

IconDropper |
| An
other icons collector. You'll find many icons packs for Mac
that use this format, because you can customize the presentation
of your icons, for distribution (adding a picture for title,
placing your icons like you want, changing the colors of the
background of the window...) |

To Animate your Icons
|
|
Kineticon |
Until
now, we have seen many beautiful icons, icons pages, icons
utilities... But now, imagine that your icons begin to move,
to live! Few flies around your trash, the pen of SimpleText's
icon is writing on its blank page... It's now possible to
have animated icons on your desktop, with application
and extension Kineticon!
How?
Using your kines is easy! Just copy the one you want and paste
it (via Informations window) where you want (folder, document,
application), and watch! You can edit a Kine with the Kineticon
editor: you will be able to change the repetition mode, the
speed. You can also create your own Kines just by pasting
icons one after one in the editor.
