With Desktop pictures, you can change the background of your screen; with StartUpScreen, change the picture that shows when your Mac is loading, at start-up; and with patterns, change the background of your desktop or of your Web pages...

Use

Desktop Picture:

Mac OS 8 and later: put the downloaded files where you want (I would advise the "Background folder", in the Appearance/System folders), and change the background of your screen with the Appearance control panel (Desktop), or use the contextual menu "Change the picture of the desktop" (ok, this is a translation of how it's called in french... it must be pretty similar in english, thought I'm not sure...)

Mac OS 7: you need to have a control panel and extension named Decor (third-party: this has nothing to do with Apple, and it's now free! :)), if you want to use pictures as background. Be careful, though, on old Macs, having a picture on background can slow the Mac (and when i'm talking about old Mac, I'm not talking about PowerMac, huh, but more something like IIvx or so...)

StartUpScreen:

Drag the file StartUpScreen, without renaming it, on your System folder. The picture will appear next time you'll launch your Mac.

Patterns:

For your desktop (clipping): drag the clipping on your Appearence Control panel (Tab desktop), and that's it... Be sure to not have any picture that recovers the pattern if you want to use it as background.

For your Web pages (jpeg): read carefully the Read-me included with the patterns: Dom explains you all there (for page background, table's background, cell's one...)

Downloads

Mac: All your downloads need to be unstuffed with StuffIt, available at Alladin.

PC: You'll need to have a Windows version of StuffIt Expander to unstuff the files. You'll find one at Alladin.

Display Requirements
Here's the size of the desktop pictures, in pixels. You need to have a look on your Monitor control panel (or Monitor and Sound) and check the depth of your screen.
640 x 480
800 x 600
832 x 624
1024 x 768
1152 x 870

Files Formats
Clipping: For Mac only.
JPEG/.jpg: Will work both on Mac and PC.
You can easily make a JPEG with a clipping, as long as you copy the clipping, paste it in a painting program, and save it as .jpg.
You can also easily make a clipping from a .jpg, if you open it in a painting program, select all, and drag the content of the window on your desktop.
